Half a million dead

The milestone of 500,000 dead from Covid-19 disease in the United States became a reality on February 22. The tragic occasion was marked by President Biden in a sunset ceremony at the White House. Here's the BBC's coverage of it:

According to the Associated Press, Biden gave a heartfelt and emotion-filled eulogy of the people lost in particularly tragic circumstances. The emphasis on the fact that each and every one of these people had to die alone was not lost on the President. His empathy, hardly an act given that his own personal life is filled with it was noted.

Riot Inquiry

This is The New York Times' main headline for February 23: Inquiries into the January 6 Capitol Hill riot will begin today. The paper offers a step-by-step of what will, presumably, happen for its duration.

The Tax Dodger

I remember a few months ago being invited by a Spanish-speaking conservative web media outlet. There was a distinctive reaction from my counterpart in the program at my mention of 'tax evasion' on the part of now-former President Trump. She politely but nervously replied that (I'm paraphrasing here): that kind of determination is up to the court. She's right, and know we'll know. But, of course, there's always more to unravel.

Johnson & Johnson: On the Brink of a Third Approved US-based Vaccine

On February 24th, the Food and Drug Administration made its official announcement regarding the Johnson & Johnson one-dose vaccine. It seems that it is quite effective in protecting against "severe disease and death from Covid-19" (NYT), and "may [help] reduce the spread of the virus by vaccinated people". Here are the documents published by the agency:

Also, The New York Times provided a manual on how the J&J vaccine works and how it differs from those of Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna:

Check this CNBC report:

The trick for J&J is providing enough of the vaccine for the US. Various media outlets said the supply will fall short of what was initially promised and we won't be seeing numerous doses of it until late-Summer.

Check back in the coming days for more.
